Elements of Design: Shape

SHAPE is an element of design.

Shape is the external form or outline of an image produced by the use of line, value, colour, and/or texture. Shape may be geometric or organic, positive or negative. Shapes have two dimensions, length and width.

In Toys, we can see positive and negative shapes.

Here is an image of Toys where the colours have been inverted:

Can you identify some objects by their shapes?

Why is it titled Toys?

What feeling does this work express?

How can you use shape in a painting to express your feelings?
